The park takes its name from the Tarangire River, a crucial water source for wildlife during the dry season. Established in 1970, it is the third-largest national park in Tanzania and a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts.
Tarangire is famous for its thriving elephant population—the largest in northern Tanzania—with herds often exceeding 500 individuals. It is also home to a wide variety of wildlife, including zebras, giraffes, buffalo, gerenuks, lions, leopards, warthogs, and hyenas.
Best Viewing Season: From June to October, the dry season attracts animals to the Tarangire River, the only permanent water source in the area.
With more than 500 bird species, Tarangire is a dream for bird lovers. Highlights include bateleur eagles, yellow-collared lovebirds, hornbills, Kori bustards, and lappet-faced vultures. These birds thrive in diverse habitats such as acacia glades and near the Tarangire River.
The park’s natural beauty is unmatched, with woodlands, swamps, plains dotted with anthills, and majestic baobab trees. The rolling savannah offers incredible views, perfect for photography and sightseeing.
Situated approximately 198 kilometers (a 3-hour and 28-minute drive) from Moshi, Tarangire National Park is an ideal choice for a safari before or after climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.
Experience the untamed beauty and rich biodiversity of Tarangire National Park. It’s a journey you’ll never forget!
Add Mkomazi National Park to your Tanzanian itinerary for an enriching and memorable experience that highlights the country’s commitment to conservation and its unparalleled natural beauty.
